Cats are among the world’s most beautiful animals, ranging from the powerful tiger to an affectionate tabby. Cats are diverse, adapting to their environment, whether it’s a jungle or a small house. This adaptability makes them ideal pets, and they fill our lives with joy and fond memories.
Grooming is a crucial part of looking after a dog, as excess hair can provide complications if their fur isn’t taken care of. Shih Tzus look like the kind of dog that would be difficult to groom, with a big fluffy coat. The truth is it’s not very time consuming if you know how to do it properly. So, here is a quick guide on how to groom your Shih Tzu, starting from a puppy all the way to an adult.
Owning a dog is one of the most rewarding experiences in the world, offering plenty of fun and timeless memories. Dogs are more than pets: they’re friends, companions and loved ones who stand by us in the most trying of circumstances and they deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. There are many wonderful breeds out there, but one of the most unique is the Eurasier, created to be the perfect family dog.
What do you see when you look at a dog? I see a friend and companion who is loyal and offers unconditional love. And few breeds live up to those qualities like German Shepherds. Considered to be one of the most popular breeds in the world, German Shepherds have their origins as working dogs. This has carried on in the modern day as they are used for police work, tracking criminals and patrolling troubled areas. They are also used in the military, being trained to parachute from aircrafts.
There are many types of unique dog breeds around the world, each with their own characteristics. One of the most interesting I’ve come across recently is the Shar Pei. The breed originates from China and is recognised by the loose, wrinkled coat. They were named one of the world’s rarest dogs in 1978 by TIME Magazine and Guinness World Records. Despite Shar Peis being an ancient breed they were not recognised by the American Kennel Club until 1992.
Through volunteering at Manchester Dog Care I’ve been introduced to a wonderful breed called a German Shorthaired Pointer and here is everything you need to know on owning one. They are powerful, streamlined dogs developed in 19th century Germany as hunting companions. Their strong legs allow them to move quickly and a broad muzzle allows them to catch large game. GSPs have webbed feet that make them strong swimmers, granting them the ability to catch water fowl as well.
Dogs are wonderful companions and their domestication allowed us to work side by side with them. Over the centuries, people have used dogs for hunting, sledding, carting and retrieving. A breed that comes from a labour background is the Bernese Mountain Dog. Used as an all purpose farm dog, it was used to drive cattle over long distances to alpine pastures. The breed originates from the Swiss Alps, working alongside herders and dairymen called Senn.
As we’ve domesticated dogs they’ve come to excel in various tasks, from herding to pulling. One of the most successful herding breeds is the Canaan. Considered to be the national dog of Israel, it’s believed the Canaan was used by Hebrews to herd and guard their flocks in biblical times. Due to their nature as scavenger dogs they have a strong survival instinct and are quick to react to strangers. They make excellent watchdogs because of their tendency to bark at disturbances.
The dog breed I’d like to talk about this week is the Eurasier, a German breed known for the strong bond it develops with its family. I’d never heard of the dog until I met an energetic Eurasier named Hammy while volunteering at Manchester Dog Care. The breed is recently developed, having been created in the 1950s by Julius Wipfel to fill the role of the perfect family dog. Wipfel’s goal was to create a medium size Spitz-type dog that was even tempered, dignified and easy to train.
Owning a dog is a worthwhile experience because they’ll fill your life with joy, loyalty and love. One of the toughest decisions is whether you decide to neuter your dog as it will calm them down at the expense of being able to have puppies. For an owner looking for an alternative solution there’s an implant called Suprelorin that prevents fertility and suppresses libido in male dogs.
