Swan Song

A sheet of light covers the canal
as a golden mirror the swan glides across
in his quest to find where he belongs
his reflection is of the ugly duckling
he once was
where onlookers see an elegant neck
and glorious white plumage
he sees moth ball duck down
meshed with scraggly grey
peace is an island
made from the nuzzles
of a partner mated for life
and so the swan keeps gliding
in search of his island
until he is but a pale speck
fluttering on the horizon
