Silverback

Plucked fruit
coloured red and passionate
one of many among a rainbow
littering the branches
hold it in the palm of your hand
and see life unfold

Dark fur turns from the canopy
silver-streaked and ethereal
as if the moon has burnt
itself into a black canvas

Pound your chest
giant who is more than gentle
who is a father
a protector

Take the fruit
and give it to one in need
the child who clings
in his mother’s arms
no wonder you’re so like us
but we can still learn from you.
